Steaks Right on the Intercoastal- Houston’s (Fort Lauderdale/Pompano Beach, Steakhouse)

Before I flew out of Fort Lauderdale yesterday I met my aunt and uncle for lunch near the airport. I was hoping to check out Market 17, which my friends have raved about, but unfortunately they are only open during lunch for private parties. My uncle knows tons about South Florida and he recommended Houston’s since it was on the way to the airport from Delray and right on the water.

We really enjoy steakhouses- Smith and Wollensky’s in South Beach is one of our favorite Miami spots to go together (really need to a blog post on it soon!) and Houston’s is like a more-laid back, tropical version of Smith and Wollensky’s, but just as good in my opinion!

For me the Intercoastal is my favorite place to eat. Biscayne Bay (which the Intercoastal becomes in Miami) is great for driving/walking across on the causeways or being in one of the parks along the water, but nothing beats eating at a restaurant on the Intercoastal. Since it’s a large canal it’s much more calm and you see a lot more boats up close. Houston’s has tables right on the water (with boats right next to it) and it’s the atmosphere I love the most about South Florida.

The food at Houston’s is great steakhouse food! I got an order of the ribs and they were truly fall of the bone (like pieces falling off as I picked it up) and the BBQ sauce was really delicious (my favorite balance of subtle tang and sweet). I really enjoyed it! It came with a side of shoestring French fries and I also got an order of their vegetable special, which was steamed broccoli with a lemon garlic aioli (love aioli and this one was good!). My aunt got a filet, which was very tender and flavorful (I usually go for my steaks more well-done but she got medium-rare and I enjoyed it so I might have to expand my horizons!). My uncle got the chicken salad, which came with a lot of different vegetables in it, but unfortunately the salad was a bit dry.

Although Market 17 is going to be next on my list when I’m in Fort Lauderdale I really enjoyed the food and waterfront location of Houston’s and so I’ll definitely be back! If you’re looking for a delicious and slightly relaxed steakhouse and bonus on the water check out Houston’s in Pompano Beach!  There are also several around Florida and the country so check out if there is one near you (although I bet you can’t beat Pompano’s waterside location!)
