Mouth salivating as I write this two months late- Besaw’s (Brunch, Gluten-Free, NW Portland)

My favorite breakfast place in Portland is Besaw’s on NW 23rd. It’s been one of my go-to spots for years, especially for weekend brunches with friends. It has awesome breakfasts in general, but even better it has a lot of gluten-free breakfast items. It’s incredibly popular (I run into several people I know every single time) and the wait can be a bit long on weekends, but well worth it. They have a number of coffee dispensers outside for people who are waiting. Inside the atmosphere is very homey and has the very busy chatter of a popular Portland brunch spot.

The menu is extensive for brunch and they also serve lunch (late @ 3 PM on weekdays) and dinner although I have yet to visit for those. Besaw’s has the usual breakfast foods but they’re all very fresh and have some really good combination of flavors. Some examples include the prosciutto scramble (prosciutto, garlic, and asiago cheese) the breakfast burger (sunny-side up egg, beef burger, white cheddar, bacon, arugula, oven-roasted tomato, sausage gravy on a piece of Belgian waffle), and breakfast burrito (eggs, chorizo, cheddar cheese, spinach, chipotle sour cream).

Their gluten-free options are French toast, pancakes, and a bun (for sandwiches) all of which are really good. They’re some of the favorites I’ve had for all three (the bun I had on a breakfast sandwich) and would highly recommend them for gluten-free eaters. The French toast you can get with fresh fruit and it and the pancakes can come with regular syrup or organic syrup for an extra cost.

This last visit I got the Farmer’s Scramble (potatoes, garlic, bacon, caramelized onions, arugula, and cheddar cheese) and the gluten-free French toast with strawberries and syrup and both were delicious! My friends got the breakfast sandwich and biscuits and gravy, which they raved about!

Besaw’s has a very Portland feel and since brunch is a huge Portland occasion those visiting should definitely check out a place like Besaw’s for the atmosphere and delicious food. For those who are gluten-free it’s options make it ever more a place to see!
