On the first day (Friday) of my family reunion in Sheboygan, WI (see pics and recap here) a big group of us were looking for a place to eat lunch and my aunt and cousin really wanted to go a pizza place they had been to before. The back story was that one time my aunt and uncle were watching a local Wisconsin access channel and it was profiling some restaurants around the state. One was Il Ritrovo in Sheboygan. So at the time my aunt and uncle decided to make the hour and a half trip to Sheboygan from Appleton to check it out and they loved it! Overtime a lot of the Appleton branch of my family had visited and become big fans! The owners own four restaurants in Sheboygan and they try to focus on really fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Right next door to Il Ritrovo is another one of their restaurants Field To Fork and down the street is their original restaurant, Trattoria Stefano, an upscale Italian restaurant.
When the conversation came to a place for lunch I didn’t think Il Ritrovo would be an option because of the limited food for gluten-frees usually at Italian restaurants. However given how popular gluten-free has become my aunt thought maybe they would have a gluten-free crust. I checked out Yelp and they did! Thus it became the perfect place for a family lunch. It took awhile for our big group to be seated (there were 13 of us), but it was well-worth the wait!
Il Ritrovo makes authentic Neopolitan pizza that fall into two categories- pizze rosse (with tomato sauce) and pizze bianche (white sauce). Fitting with the restaurant owners’ goal of farm-to-table the different pizza combinations all have fresh vegetables, cheeses, and meats. I got the Salsiccia e Broccoletti, which was with mozarella, provolone, Italian sausage, and rapini. The gluten-free crust was thin and crispy and best of all housemade! On all the pizzas the ingredients were all very fresh and flavorful. The gluten-free crust definitely felt like authentic Neapolitan pizza and seemed barely gluten-free to me. I was really happy with my pizza, as were my mom who got a gluten-free pizza with tomatoes, mushrooms, and basil and all my other relatives who got the regular pizzas. You can’t get much better than fresh and authentic, especially when it comes to pizza!
Anyone looking for pizza in Sheboygan should have Il Ritrovo at the top of their list and if you’re looking for gluten-free pizza it should be #1 and not just because it might be the only gluten-free pizza in Sheboygan, but because it has really delicious, crispy housemade gluten-free crust! I wish we had more time for me to try out other pizzas, but when I return to Sheboygan I’ll be just as eager to return to Il Ritrovo as the rest of my family!
