Bringing a bit of California to Lincoln Road- Huahua’s Taqueria (South Beach, Mexican)

A friend unfortunately just moved away from Miami up to NYC (like who does that right?)… A move means a going away dinner though and we made plans to meet for dinner off Lincoln Road one night the other week. She suggested sushi, but I just had done sushi for lunch (and ate way too much) and wasn’t sure if I could do more in just a few hours. Luckily I mentioned Huahua’s Taqueria (which I had been meaning to check out for months) and she was already a big fan. Huahua’s is open late so she goes often on the weekends living a few blocks away.

Huahua’s is on the long list of places I had read about before and after the opening, but took months (if not a year or more) to visit. A friend from Oregon even checked it out one time while I was working, which just puts me to shame in my own city. Luckily I can check this one off the list.

Huahua’s has a lot of the usual Mexican items- chips and dips, nachos, tacos, and burritos. I focused in on the tacos. There are Huahua’s signature tacos and also their specialty tacos. The breakfast taco immediately caught my attention with cheesy eggs, carnitas, and hashbrowns. The grilled steak also looked good with black bean pico, avocado, pickled jalapenos, and chili-line vinaigrette. I followed it up with the Gringo (citrus chicken, jack cheese, tomato, lettuce, and crema) plus a side of chips and queso blanco.

When I ordered I asked if the tacos could all be made with corn tortillas and the guy said definitely. He also shared the specialty- flautas- which were also made with corn tortillas. I ordered my food at the counter and took a seat inside. They have some great outdoor seating on the street, although all those tables were taken. Inside the seating is a little tight, but it reminds me of a lot of the legit taco places in Southern California.

Unfortunately when my food came out they were with flour tortillas. I maybe should have specified each as corn tortillas extra carefully, but I thought that was clear from my question and conversation. Regardless it was just a little extra time to have them re-made.

Of the tacos the breakfast was probably my favorite because of the hashbrowns and carnitas, although the grilled steak was also good and the Gringo had the traditional taco yummyness. The corn tortillas themselves were delicious and the fillings, especially the meat, were high quality. For $4 for pretty good sized (and well-stuffed) tacos I would rate this as a pretty good deal. For future visits my friend recommended the nachos and fried chicken taco, although I unfortunately can’t have that last one.

I was very happy with Huahua’s Taqueria and enjoyed the tacos. It’ll be on my mind when looking for food on Lincoln Road and my next visit the nachos and/or flautas (if they’re back as a specialty) will be my go-tos. Although of course you can never go wrong with more good tacos!
