Chicago (Gluten-Free)

My mom grew up in Chicago and that side of my family is in Chicago/Wisconsin. I would go back to Chicago at least once or twice a year growing up, so it’s pretty much a second home. Chicago is one of my favorite cities (even in the winter. Sort of…). Since starting my blog I have been able to visit a good amount of gluten-free restaurants (Chicago has a pretty good number of options) and some of my favorite sights in the Windy City.

Restaurants (*gluten-free):

  • Agio Bistro (Palatine)*- slightly upscale Italian restaurant in the Northwest suburb of Palatine with gluten-free pasta. Enjoyed my meal and is a nice option to have in the suburbs.
  • Cassava (Lake View)*– entirely gluten-free facility that makes gluten-free empanadas and cassava rolls (flavored breads). Cassava is a root that is the source of tapioca (called yuca in Spanish). It’s naturally gluten-free!
  • Cookie Bar Gluten-Free Bakery (Ravenswood)*– 100% gluten-free bakery with some excellent gluten-free cookies, plus some scumptuous brownies, cupcakes, doughnuts, and more. Definitely worth a visit for gluten-frees!
  • Da Luciano (River Grove)*– Italian restaurant with an extensive gluten-free menu. Several of the owner’s children have celiac, so they’ve worked over the years to make some great options. Options include gluten-free ravioli, lasagna, manicotti, canneloni, garlic bread, fried mozzarella wedges, cream puffs, cannolis. Yeah it’s a pretty crazy number of options!
  • Do-Rite Doughnuts (The Loop)*- gluten-free doughnuts that are pretty good. For those gluten-frees who are really craving doughnuts this is probably worth checking out.
  • Elephant and Castle (The Loop)*- “British pub” in the Loop inside a hotel. Gluten-free buns that aren’t that bad depending on what sandwich or burger you get it with.
  • Giordano’s Famous Stuffed Pizza (The Loop and other locations across Chicago)– has a gluten-free crust, but someone commented on the post and said the sauce is not gluten-free. Seems odd they’d offer the crust option without a gluten-free sauce. I do not remember having a reaction. Maybe worth calling to confirm about the sauce if you’re near a location and interested in the gluten-free pizza.
  • Great Harvest Bread Company (Naperville and locations across the country)*- before gluten-free was really popular this location had gluten-free chocolate chip cookies that you could order ahead of time for certain days. Was pretty obsessed with them. Still think their gluten-free cookies are pretty good!
  • Homeslice (Lincoln Park)*- a Ducks bar!! with gluten-free pizza crust. Has a lot of delicious topping combinations to put on the crusts.
  • Italian Village (The Loop)*- gluten-free pasta at an old school Italian restaurant. Cool restaurant space modeled after an Italian “village.”
  • Jason’s Deli (The Loop and locations across the country)*- national chain that uses Udi’s gluten-free bread. They make some pretty delicious sandwiches with that bread and have been been very thoughtful about preventing cross contamination when I’ve gone.
  • Maggiano’s Little Italy (River North and locations across the U.S.)*- national chain that has gluten-free pasta. Liked the variety of options they had and was a fan! They were also really great about accomodating gluten-frees (at least at the Chicago- River North location)
  • The Publican (West Loop)– excellent brunch spot in the West Loop with breakfast foods (bacon and hash browns), plus some more nontraditional items like Spanish tapas. Plus Publican Quality Meats across the street makes some delicious pints of ice cream.
  • Roti Mediterranean Grill (locations in the Loop, plus New York City and D.C.)*- one of my favorite chains in the country with gluten-free options. Delicious gluten-free options. Wish they would come to Miami!
  • Traversos (Naperville)*- this is an old favorite of my family’s. Growing up I went with the potato skins and Italian sausage. Sometimes I’d also take the toppings off the regular pizza (toppings were pretty good quality!). But now they have gluten-free pasta and pizza. I’ve had the gluten-free pasta, which I enjoyed.
  • Vapiano (Lincoln Park location now closed, The Loop, and locations around the world)– Italian restaurant with cool concept where you get a charge “card,” get your food from different stations, and are served just drinks at your table. Nice for big groups. No gluten-free options when I visited unfortunately.
  • Wilde’s (Lake View)*- the best macaroni and cheese I’ve ever had (gluten-free or otherwise). A visit is well worth it for the gluten-free macaroni and cheese, but they also have gluten-free burgers and sandwiches. A separate gluten-free menu is available.
  • Wildfire (River North and around Chicagoland)*- crazy extensive gluten-free menu! You’ll be shocked at all that is on there. Favorites include French onion soup, complimentary gluten-free bread, gluten-free flatbreads, pastas, sandwiches and burgers, macaroni and cheese. The list goes on! Upscale and a bit pricey, but well worth it.
